USS Growler (SSG-577)

During Hector's Branson performance on April 24, 2004, Hector met the crew of the USS Growler who were in Branson enjoying a reunion. Hector played some very special maritime music while displaying on the large side screens various scenes of the exterior & interior of the submarine Growler.

Following the performance, Hector & Lieve were invited back to the Growler's reunion hotel where a very special inauguration ceremony was held for Hector.

Now, share Hector's pride and gratitude to the crew members of the Growler as they honored their new shipmate - the honorary appointment of Chief Petty Officer Hector Olivera.

For additional information on the USS Growler (SSG-577) please visit their web site. U.S.S. GROWLER was a pioneer when she departed on her first Nuclear Deterrent Patrol in 1960. Armed with Regulus nuclear cruise missiles, she helped usher in a new era of strategic defense. You are encouraged to visit the Growler crew site as well. You are encouraged to visit the Regulus Guided Cruise Missile web site as well. The Regulus was the Navy's first nuclear armed cruise missile. Of course when you visit NYC, be sure to stop by the actual Growler, moored along side (see image below) the Aircraft Carrier Intrepid at the Intrepid Sea Air and Space museum in New York city, Pier 86, 12th Avenue & West 46th Street, New York (NY), phone: 212-245-0072.

Again, our appreciation to the crew members of the USS Growler for honoring Hector in this manner.

We also, appreciate the use of the Growlers' web site background wallpaper - the submariners dolphin insignia

On May 31, 2004 Hector had an opportunity to go aboard the USS Growler. He experienced, in a small way, what it was like within the SSG-577. (See below for two photographs). For additional images, CLICK HERE

Read what he had to say in a e-mail about this day:

I Had a blast! Met Ken Olney. Had VIP tour! Before going bellow, I touch the "Regulus." He was able to unlock doors to the "Chief (Goat)" locker!!! I had my hands on the "Wheel." I also loaded a torpedo on the aft tube, Make believe that I was flooding the tubes, compensate for buoyancy with the valve in the floor and finally crawl under the rail and grip the handle and press the trigger...I don't know were the torpedo went...I call the control room ... they were tracking...and told me that apparently I sank a "Carnival" cruise liner ship!!! Wore headphones, grease one diesel engine. I could not find the "Spark plugs" (Joke!) Sat at mess hall, played an imaginary checker's game with Tom Jones... Got up and help myself to an "Ice Cream"...Had coffee afterwards... Checked with Tom Coffman and the sound shack just to make sure He (Tom Coffman) were doing a proper manual "Sweep" and HE (Tom Coffman) was not using the "Toggle Switch"... Lay down for a few minutes on an bunker...(God, they are so small!) Checked with the "Culinary Specialist" to see what we were having for dinner... Checked on the water supply and made sure fresh water was OK! Had a few minutes on the Periscope. Took a lot of pictures! I met a man by the name of Vanja "Sandy" Glusica (Director of Visitor Service) who gave me an open invitation to return anytime I want and spend longer time on board of the Growler. P.S. When I crawled under the rail to reach for the aft Torpedo "Trigger" I got an oil stain in the back of my shirt.

(All of these fine photographs, with Hector on board the Growler, were taken by Bob Leety. Thank you Bob!)
